ASTM A790 UNS S31803/SAF2205 Duplex Steel Seamless Pipe Thick Wall
ASTM A790 UNS S31803 is a specification in duplex steel material. The material is an alloy of steel with chromium and molybdenum in it. The addition of these materials makes the pipes stronger and much corrosion resistant. The SA 790 UNS S31803 one of the super duplex grades which is stronger and corrosion resistant. The duplex grades are divided into three groups as duplex, lean and super duplex. The super duplex is used for specific applications that operate under elevated temperatures. The Duplex UNS S31803 Pipes also possesses an elevated strength due to the production nature. The material could be hot rolled and welded or be cold drawn. The cold drawn pipes are seamless and have less absolute roughness which makes them precise in dimensions. The hot rolled and Welded A928 UNS S31803 material on the other hand is much stronger and could be used with welding applications. The ease of welding in the ASTM A790 UNS S31803 Tube makes it a choice for high pressure applications that will require extensive welding at installation.
The SA 790 UNS S31803 Duplex Steel Seamless Pipe is also highly corrosion resistant in sea water and other chloride ion rich environments. This chloride ion corrosion stress cracking resistance makes it one of the best cost effective solutions in the long run. The Duplex 31803 Seamless Pipes are used in high sensitive applications where the measurements need to be accurate.
Duplex SAF2205 stainless steel (both ferritic and austenitic) is used extensively in applications that require good corrosion resistance and strength. The UNS S31803 grade stainless steel has undergone a number of modifications resulting in UNS S32205, and was endorsed in the year 1996. This grade offers higher resistance to corrosion.
At temperatures above 300°C, the brittle micro-constituents of this grade undergo precipitation, and at temperatures below -50°C the micro-constituents undergo ductile-to-brittle transition; hence this grade of stainless steel is not suitable for use at these temperatures.

| 904L | Better formability is needed, with similar corrosion resistance and lower strength. |
| UR52N+ | High resistance to corrosion is required, e.g. resistance to higher temperature seawater. |
| 6%Mo | Higher corrosion resistance is required, but with lower strength and better formability. |
| 316L | The high corrosion resistance and strength of 2205 are not needed. 316L is lower cost. |
